Very interesting. I would have thought that sports fans would be jumping for joy for a stadium close by. Now I see why they are not. In Hartford they are planning a mixed use development including residential, parking and retail adjacent to the minor league baseball stadium. Love the concept of Sports Mayor. Just think, when I was in grade school the only sport for girls was field hockey.
We should think of sports dollars as entertainment dollars within discussions about the local and regional economic impact of sports. New York, LA, SF, and Houston all provide rich arrays of entertainment options. Do people really expand their entertainment budgets to accommodate expenditures on local sporting events, or is it more like replacing one kind of entertaining spending for another? Second, it also made me chuckle when people reacted to the Oilers' departure as "we lost football in Houston." It's not the same thing, but there are many football options within the Houston region, regardless of the presence of an NFL team. I hope that KCers stick to their guns.
