I’m excited to announce the summer 2024 subscriber event in Detroit on August 12-13, 2024. If you’re a paying subscriber, you probably caught the sneak peek a few weeks ago, but I’ve now confirmed dates. It’s going to be a fun 24 hours of checking out a number of new exciting buildings and public spaces that have recently opened or are opening in the coming months.

Michigan Central in Detroit

We’re going to visit a number of different spots and get guided tours from local leaders involved in these projects, including:

  • Michigan Central — an abandoned train station renovated into a 30-acre campus including a mobility innovation district housing Ford, Newlab, Google, and others

  • The Shepherd and Library Street Collective - a cultural arts campus featuring a gallery, boutique hotel, skateboard park and more

  • Ralph Wilson Park - a 22-acre waterfront park designed by Michael Van Valkenburg

  • A walking tour of downtown’s revitalization, including Hudson’s, a new skyscraper

  • Drinks and dinner at the renovated Book Tower

If the two past New Urban Order subscriber events last fall are any indicator, the people on the trip and the conversation they provide will be just as much fun as the spaces themselves. Detroit has been in the news lately for growing its population after decades of decline, and for reinvigorating its downtown and reversing the “urban doom loop.” Join us to see what the fuss is about and to discuss what Detroit’s innovations could mean for your community.

Please note:

  • The event is free, but you will have to pay for your own meals, hotel, and transportation (including some carshares around town for the tour).

  • Each person must be a paying subscriber to attend — your subscription does not include friends, significant others, coworkers, etc. If you will be attending on your employer’s dime, I ask you to subscribe at the Founding Subscriber level.

  • Final caveat: given that many things are beyond my control and I am running these tours as a passion project, please only attend if you are ok with an event that is informal, subject to change, and may not be able to accommodate special requests/needs.
