Last chance: Meet up in D.C. next week!
Join us for a tour of the Bridge Park and a casual dinner
When I started this newsletter, I not only wanted to share some thoughts about cities and engage a community in conversation, but I also thought it would be cool to explore new projects and best practices in cities together.
My goal is to invite subscribers on tours of different projects at least twice a year, with these trips potentially getting more elaborate as the subscriber base and support for the trips grows.
For now, as you can imagine, I’m doing this all in my spare time and need to start small and very casual. So, on October 3rd, I’d like to invite you all to meet in D.C. for a free tour of a very special project and then grab some drinks and food after.
Where We’re Going:
The 11th Street Bridge Park on October 3, 2023 at 3:30pm ET
Washington, D.C.'s first elevated public park will be perched over the Anacostia River. Located on the piers of the old 11th Street Bridge, this venue will be a space for healthy recreation, environmental education, and the arts.
We’ll meet Scott Kratz, 11th Street Bridge Park Director, for a project overview and then walk 2 – 3 blocks down the park site. The tour and discussion should take an hour.
While you may know of the Bridge Park because of the dynamic design, the real story of the park is its remarkable equitable development plan, including a community land trust. We will learn about all the social, economic, and environmental aspects of the park on the tour!
To get ready for the tour, you should definitely watch this beautifully done short video about the project:
And you should read this in-depth article from the New York Times about the challenge of creating an amenity like the park without causing displacement.
I, for one, am really excited for this discussion since I’ve read so much about the Bridge Park but never actually been down to the site.
Drinks and Dinner After:
After we wrap up the tour around 4:30, we’ll all head to The Roost, a new food hall that has lots of different vendors sure to accommodate anyone’s taste. We can carpool in Ubers or take a group bike ride over there. I chose The Roost because it gets good reviews and does not require reservations, which will allow for last-minute RSVPs. We will grab some drinks and then have dinner. I don’t know when that will end but I will be taking an 8:30pm train ride home!
How to RSVP
If you’d like to join us for this first event, please simply send me an email at dianalindheller@gmail.com and let me know if you plan to join both the tour and dinner, or just one part.
Have other questions or comments? Email me or post in the comments below.
I will be sending final instructions and information to all people who have RSVP’d by the end of the day on September 29th.
Thanks, I think this will be a lot of fun and hope you can join me!
