At the beginning of this year, I shared a post where I offered 12 recommendations for upcoming books about “housing, cities, and more” that I thought readers would enjoy. The response to that post surprised me - I received a number of personal emails and comments on my LinkedIn asking for some kind of structured way to read and engage with these books as a group - a good old-fashioned (virtual) book club, if you will.
I’m excited to announce that The New Urban Order friend and loyal subscriber Kerry Hayes has offered to help organize this, so we’re hereby very happy to officially launch of The New Urban Order Book Club. We’ll start off with one book selection in both the spring and the fall of 2025, and if there’s interest in meeting more frequently and reading more books together, we’ll ramp up the frequency.
Our inaugural selection is Stuck by Yoni Applebaum. Stuck offers a fascinating exploration of how mobility (and America’s lack thereof today) shapes our neighborhoods, economies, and opportunities. It’s also been one of the most talked about books this season. If you haven’t already heard about Stuck, check out this excerpt from the February issue of The Atlantic — we are certain it will make you want to read the whole book.
We can’t wait to have Yoni join this community for a conversation about it.
Here's how you can participate:
Save the Date: Join us for a special virtual event on Zoom with Yoni Applebaum on May 22 at 6:00 p.m. ET, where Kerry and I will discuss the book directly with the author himself. If you’re a subscriber, you can submit questions here to ask Yoni and we’ll get to as many as we can. (And if you’re not yet a paid subscriber, now is the perfect time to become one here!)
Buy your copy of Stuck now. We recommend using Bookshop if you are ordering online. Or, support your own local bookstore and grab a copy there in person!
Start reading! Easy enough. Make notes and think about your questions for the author.
More details, including how to register for the May 22nd Zoom, will be shared soon.
My thanks to Kerry for helping to get this organized and much gratitude to Yoni for giving us this amazing book and some of his time later this spring.
Happy reading!
